Evaluation of the NEPS by the German Council of Science and Humanities

On December 13 and 14, a working group from the German Council of Science and Humanities consisting of top-class international scientists as well as representatives of the German state and the Länder came to evaluate the National Educational Panel Study at the central coordinating office in Bamberg.

Medal of Honor of Upper Franconia awarded to Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Blossfeld

The President of the Regional Authority Council (Bezirkstag) of Upper Franconia, Dr. Günther Denzler, has awarded Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Hans-Peter Blossfeld with the Silver Medal of Honor of Upper Franconia for his achievements in strengthening the region as a center of scientific research.

Workshop by Tenko Raykov on the subject of index formation

11/30/2012

In a 2-day workshop on the subject of index formation held on November 27 and 28, 2012, Tenko Raykov of the Michigan State University (USA) presented procedures of factor analysis for the process of dimension reduction. Example analyses in Mplus and additionally in R were conducted and analyzed in detail. In this way, the workshop also contained an introduction into the statistics software Mplus.

Guest stay of Dr. Jenny Chesters

From November 12 to 24, Dr. Jenny Chesters from the Faculty of Education at the University of Canberra was a guest of the NEPS in Bamberg. Throughout her stay, she was in close contact with the NEPS team. Over a series of meetings, Dr. Jenny Chesters exchanged views with the NEPS staff regarding the structure and contents of the stages and pillars. In addition, she was given an introduction to the structure of NEPS data.

On October 22, representatives of all factions of Bamberg City Council visited the National Educational Panel Study in Bamberg. On-site at the Wilhelmspost, Council Members gained an insight into the work and premises of the project. This visit emphasized not only the high-ranking position of this exceptional scientific project but also the political and economic relevance of NEPS for the City of Bamberg, the University, and the whole region of Upper Franconia.

NEPS visit at the Institute of Education (IBE) in Warsaw, Poland, as first step to closer cooperation

On October 15 and 16, NEPS was a guest at the Polish Institute for Education (IBE) in Warsaw. Besides presentations by colleagues from the College of William and Mary in Virginia, USA, Michaela Sixt presented a general overview on the background, the framework, and the multicohort sequence design of NEPS as part of the Institute's colloquium.

NEPS arranges satellite symposium at KogWis 2012

The National Educational Panel Study (NEPS) arranged a satellite symposium with presentations on the composition, function, and measurement of competencies as part of the 11th Biannual Conference of the German Cognitive Science Society 2012 (KogWis) held at the University in Bamberg from September 30 to October 3rd, 2012. “From Cognitive Models to Cognitive Assistance“ was the theme of this year’s conference which attracted many scientists from diverse research fields, such as psychology, neuroscience, philosophy, and computer science, who met to present and discuss their work and be inspired by other projects.

NEPS participates in the Congress of the German Psychological Society 2012

The National Educational Panel Study visited the 48th Congress of the German Psychological Society (DGPs) in Bielefeld, Germany, from September 23 to 27. About 2,500 international researchers from different fields took part in the congress under the motto "Fascination Research".

Guest lectures by Prof. Dr. Jutta Heckhausen as part of a guest stay at the NEPS

As part of a two-week guest stay at the NEPS, Prof. Dr. Jutta Heckhausen from the University of California, Irvine, gave two lectures in which she not only introduced life-course-oriented motivational theory, but also connected this in a systematic way with the analysis potential of NEPS data.

NEPS makes appearance at ASA 2012 in Denver, Colorado

The annual meeting of the American Sociological Association took place under the slogan “Real Utopias – Emancipatory Projects, Institutional Designs, Possible Futures” from August 17-20, 2012, in the Convention Center Denver, Colorado. There, NEPS appeared together with other longitudinal studies from Germany as part of the BMBF-Initiative “Research in Germany”.

From Bamberg to Florence

On June 18, 2012, Managing Director and Principal Investigator of the NEPS, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Hans-Peter Blossfeld, said goodbye to Bamberg’s NEPS team and to his colleagues from Otto-Friedrich-University Bamberg at a ceremonial occasion. He introduced Prof. Dr. Hans-Günther Roßbach as his successor.

President of GESIS visited NEPS

On June 21, 2012, NEPS was pleased to welcome its guest, Prof. Dr. York Sure-Vetter, in Bamberg. Since 2009, Prof. Dr. York Sure-Vetter, who also holds a professorship for applied informatics in Coblenz, has been president of GESIS, a central Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences in Germany. With its research-based range of services and products, GESIS covers the full breadth of the research process in empirical social research.

DFG Funding Atlas: The University of Bamberg reaps highest funding sum nationwide with NEPS in the field of “Innovations in Education”

The Funding Atlas of the DFG (German Research Foundation) has confirmed an exceptionally positive balance of third-party funds at the University of Bamberg. In the area of project funding in research and development, the University of Bamberg and the NEPS rank first in Germany. Within the scope of DFG-grants focusing on the humanities and social sciences, the University ranks second in Bavaria.

Brain Mechanisms of Learning and Memory

During his visit to the NEPS in Bamberg on May 15, 2012, Prof. Dr. Henning Scheich from  the Leibniz Institute for Neurobiology in Magdeburg delivered a guest lecture about “Brain Mechanisms of Learning and Education”, which gave the audience some understanding of brain research. Among the topics featured in his presentation were the processing of acoustic information and speech, the alteration of neural cells and synapses and learning processes.

NEPS is one step closer to becoming a Leibniz institution

In a meeting on April 20, 2012, the Joint Science Conference (Gemeinsame Wissenschaftskonferenz, GWK) issued a recommendation to the federal states hosting the following three institutes to request an evaluation by the German Council for Science and the Humanities regarding their scientific quality and transregional significance. This is to decide whether these research institutes should in future be funded as Leibniz institutions by both the federal government and the Länder:

  • National Educational Panel Study (NEPS) from the University of Bamberg,
  • DWI from the RWTH Aachen (DWI),
  • Institute of Photonic Technology (IPHT).

NEPS participated in convention "Educational Research 2020 – Challenges and Perspectives" organized by the BMBF

The National Educational Panel Study presented itself at a convention titled “Educational Research 2020 – Challenges and Perspectives” organized by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) on March 29 and 30. Alongside numerous scientists and politicians, lots of journalists, pedagogues and representatives of many different associations attended the well-frequented meeting. During the two days, almost 400 attendees in a total of 12 panels had the opportunity to inform themselves about a number of different contemporary topics and projects concerning educational research (more information can be found in the specially designed brochure) and discuss them in an interdisciplinary fashion.

Representatives of special needs schools, special education associations and the National Institute for School Quality and Educational Research (ISB) from Munich accepted the invitation by Managing Project Director and Principal Investigator of the NEPS, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Hans-Peter Blossfeld, to visit Bamberg. In the main coordination office of the biggest German educational study, the Executive Director of Research, Dr. Jutta von Maurice, first gave an overview of the project’s general layout.
